AML

AML (Anti-Money Laundering) is the set of laws, controls and monitoring processes that prevent a gambling operation from being used to launder criminal funds or finance terrorism.

Gambling is classified as a high-risk sector under frameworks such as the EU AML directives and the UK's Proceeds of Crime Act, so licensed operators carry obligations comparable to financial institutions:

  • a risk-based approach — documented business-wide risk assessment and customer risk scoring;
  • customer due diligenceKYC, plus enhanced due diligence for high-risk players;
  • transaction monitoring — detecting patterns such as minimal-play deposits and withdrawals, structuring, or third-party funding;
  • suspicious activity reporting to the national financial intelligence unit;
  • a nominated AML officer (MLRO) and staff training, with records retained for regulator inspection.

Unlike KYC, which is a checkpoint, AML is continuous: risk scores and monitoring rules must follow the player through their whole lifecycle, across brands and payment methods.

Why it matters: AML enforcement produces the largest fines in iGaming, and regulators hold senior management personally accountable. Platform-level support — unified player view, configurable monitoring rules, audit-ready reporting, as in the Vuch compliance suite — is what makes obligations operationally sustainable.
