Sportsbook

A sportsbook is the product and platform through which an operator offers sports betting — pricing events, accepting bets, managing risk and settling outcomes across pre-match and live markets.

In B2B terms, sportsbook software is a distinct stack from casino: it needs official and unofficial data feeds, an odds engine, a trading and risk layer, a bet engine for placement and settlement, and a betting front end — all connected to the operator's PAM and wallet.

Operators evaluating sportsbook platforms typically weigh:

  • Coverage — sports, leagues and market depth, especially in-play;
  • Trading model — fully managed by the supplier, in-house, or hybrid;
  • Margin control — the ability to set overround per sport and market;
  • Product featuresbet builders, cash-out, early payout promotions;
  • Latency — critical for in-play betting, where slow odds mean arbitrage exposure.

Unlike casino, sportsbook GGR margin is volatile: results can produce losing weeks, so performance is judged on hold percentage over months, not days.

Why it matters: sport drives high-frequency engagement and cross-sell into casino, but it is unforgiving of weak risk management. Operators who want event-based wagering without running a trading desk increasingly look at prediction markets, where an automated market maker prices outcomes instead of a compiler.
