Sub-Affiliate

Published: 2026-08-12Last updated: 2026-08-12

A sub-affiliate is a partner recruited into an operator's affiliate program by an existing affiliate, who then earns an override commission — typically a small percentage of the sub-affiliate's earnings — for the referral.

Sub-affiliation is effectively a referral tier inside the program: the recruiting ("master") affiliate shares their network in exchange for a passive cut, commonly around 2–10% of the sub-affiliate's commissions, paid by the operator on top of (not out of) the sub-affiliate's own earnings, depending on program terms.

For operators, the mechanics require explicit design:

  • Tracking hierarchy — the platform must attribute each sub-affiliate to their recruiter and compute overrides automatically, including through deal changes;
  • Depth limits — most programs cap the structure at one tier to avoid MLM-like chains;
  • Compliance exposure — the operator remains accountable for every sub-affiliate's advertising, even though the relationship arrived second-hand; onboarding checks cannot be skipped for referred partners;
  • Fraud surface — self-referral schemes, where one entity poses as both tiers to inflate commissions.

Why it matters: sub-affiliation is a cheap growth channel for the program itself — affiliates recruit their peers — but only if the tracking layer enforces hierarchy, checks and caps. Native multi-tier support in modern affiliate software is what keeps overrides from becoming untraceable liabilities.
